Federation-wide matters still moving forward, against all odds 

First of all, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution you are all making, for Quebecers’ benefit, despite these hard pandemic times. On top of all the upheavals affecting how our training activities are organized and, for many, our preparation time for the certification exams, the physical and psychological workload is heavier. And all that is in addition to the issues we were already having to deal with, including the challenging implementation of CBD in some specialties.

If you are unable to perform call duty (e.g., because you are sick), let your staff physician and the person responsible for call schedules know immediately. Note, however, that it is not your responsibility to find your replacement. Your CR or ACR will handle that, as it is part of their job description. 

Then notify your establishment’s Health and Safety Office, obtain a medical certificate, and apply to Quebec’s labour standards and workmen’s compensation board (CNESST), submitting your medical certificate. You are eligible for the income replacement benefit paid under the Act respecting industrial accidents and occupational diseases. You will be entitled to a benefit equivalent to 90% of your net income. The benefit will be paid by the establishment. 

Under amendments made to the QPIP, parents of children born or adopted on or after January 1, 2021 will receive new paternity, parental or adoption benefits, an increase in the number of weeks of benefits, a new welcome and support benefit with respect to an adoption, additional weeks’ leave associated with a multiple birth or adoption, and the cessation of benefits two weeks after the death of the child.

Submit an initiative that would directly enhance your fellow resident doctors’ health and wellness, and we will be pleased to contribute financially to your project.

Are you passionate about postgraduate medical education? You would like to conduct research on the organization of care, call schedules, work-family balance, mental health during residency? Submit a grant application for your research project on one of these subjects or on another aspect of postgraduate medical education. You could receive a grant of up to $10,000.

With a view to learning more about resident doctors’ experience with regard to their access to the QHR, and to improve the current process, the Quebec Health Insurance Board (RAMQ) would like to know about the steps you had to take to communicate with RAMQ, what you are asked for, and how your experience was of the procedure for obtaining access to the QHR. In this issue, the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) reports on the Interdisciplinary Training Days held virtually in 2020, delves into the world of geriatrics, presents the latest conclusions from the provincial Institut de la pertinence des actes médicaux concerning the appropriateness of how funds are spent in specialized medicine, and looks at starting out in practice during a pandemic.

The latest issue of Le Médecin du Québec provides a brief update on COVID-19, along with an article on paraclinical evaluations in cardiology, and training on minor surgery and high blood pressure. The book column presents Soigner du nord au sud by Dr Danielle Perreault.

The Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) gives you access to the electronic version of its monthly publication, Le Médecin du Québec. Family medicine residents may access it without charge via the App Store or Google Play. A tablet version is also available.

CISSS des Laurentides is looking for pediatricians. Join the committed, dynamic Saint-Jérôme Regional Hospital Pediatrics medical team, and take part in the department’s different activities: 18-bed pediatric hospitalization unit, 8-bed Level II B neo-natal unit, outpatient services offering a number of specialty clinics, and a developmental clinic. The Laurentians (Laurentides) are seeing considerable demographic growth, and many young families are choosing to settle in the region. Several development projects in Pediatrics will be starting up in the next few years!

We provide two apartments for you in Montreal, exclusively for resident doctors. In view of the public health rules still in effect, we limit access to these apartments to one member at a time per apartment, although they can normally accommodate three members. To be eligible, your rotation must be recognized as mandatory by your program director and take place more than 50 km away from your usual training site.

• Have the form signed by your program director or his representative; and
