2021-2022: A NEW YEAR RATHER CALMER THAN THE PAST 18 MONTHS?

Dear Colleagues,

Things are looking up for the coming year, with a gradual return to some degree of normalcy in the wake of the pandemic, although caution is still called for over the next few months. But health measures are already less restrictive, and the number of COVID-19 cases is falling week by week. These changes certainly bode well for 2021-2022 for us all, and for our patients.

COVID-19: Government offering $100 per term

In the context of the COVID-19 health emergency, the Quebec government has introduced a temporary measure aimed at acknowledging the difficulties experienced by students. This measure is aimed at students enrolled in educational institutions, so it applies to resident doctors. You will be able to receive a lump sum payment of a maximum of $200, or $100 per term (Fall 2020 and Winter 2021). To receive this amount, you must meet the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in a Quebec educational institution recognized by the provincial Ministry of Higher Education;

  • have a permanent code;

  • be studying on a full-time basis in accordance with the criteria approved by the provincial Treasury Board;

  • be enrolled in credit courses that would have required attendance in Quebec in a context other than the pandemic;

  • have the authorization to study in Quebec (for international students);

  • have a bank account at a Canadian financial institution;

  • agree to have your banking information passed on to the Ministry of Higher Education and the Quebec Revenue Agency (ARQ).

Jacques Étienne Des Marchais Scholarship – $50,000

The University of Montreal is running a competition again this year for a $50,000 scholarship. The awarding of this scholarship will contribute to creating the best possible conditions for excellence in pedagogy/medical education at UofM, with a view to enhancing medicine in Quebec. Application deadline is November 1, 2021, and results will be announced in early December.

New virtual Graduate Certificate at McGill
How Leadership Can Change the Face of Healthcare

McGill University is launching a new, entirely virtual Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management (GCHM). This 9-month, part-time program has a flexible format. From team management to negotiating, via management of organizational problems, the curriculum has been mapped to address the key competencies of the Leadership Role in the Royal College’s CanMEDS educational framework. The 15-credit program is offered in four intensive 6-day modules over nine months. Bridging the modules will be group work, workshops, mentoring, and an experiential (CAPSTONE) project, reinforcing class learning with real-world experience.

Le Spécialiste : Pratiquer en région

In this issue of Le Spécialiste (in French only), the FMSQ provides an update on physician resource planning in non-FM specialties, and the challenges and advantages of specialty medicine in the regions.

It also profiles two specialist physicians: Dr Lena Rivard, a cardiologist-electrophysiologist working on a research project entitled Treating the heart, helping the brain, and Dr Ariane Clairoux, an anesthesiologist who has successfully used regional anesthesia for mastectomies during the pandemic.

ALDO-Quebec: Mandatory Training, Required for Obtaining a Permit to Practise in Quebec

All medical residents have to take part in an ALDO-Quebec training session at some time during their training to be eligible for their permit from the Collège des médecins du Québec.

Registration must be completed one month prior to the training session.
